What Is Medicare and Who Is Eligible?

May 2025

Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older, though it also covers some younger individuals with disabilities or certain health conditions. Understanding the basics of Medicare is the first step in making informed decisions about your healthcare.

There are four parts of Medicare:

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facilities, hospice, and some home health services.

  • Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and medical supplies.

  • Part C (Medicare Advantage): An alternative to Original Medicare, offered by private insurance companies. Often includes additional benefits like dental or vision.

  • Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps cover the cost of prescription medications.

To qualify, most individuals must be U.S. citizens or legal residents who have lived in the country for at least five years and are either 65 or older, or have a qualifying disability.
